The number of bones. The precise number of bones in adult human beings is certainly a constant, but in the presence of inconstant bones, anomalies, supernumerary bones, fused bones, etc, the exact number depends on a number of simple decisions about what is to be counted or not. Following the most accepted recommendations on this topic, the rules are set below. The permanent bones to be counted are: the long bones (os longum), the short bones (os breve), the flat bones (os planum), the irregular bones (os irregulare) and the patella. The bones coming by pair are counted as 2 bones.The non permanent bones which are to be discarded are: the sesamoid bones (os sesamoideum) except the patella, the abnormal bones (os anomalum), the fused bones (os ischii, os ilii, os pubis, sacral vertebrae, coccygeal vertebrae).On the basis of the above decisions, the sum is 90 long bones, 30 short bones, 36 flat bones, 48 irregular bones and 2 patellae, making the total of 206 bones. |
